Venom and Gwen, Dumb and Dumber: A Winter Tribute Fanart

Dumb and Dumber was, and is (despite the heartbreaking midlife crisis Jim Carrey happens to be currently going through) my favourite 90's era road trip movie. If you haven't seen it, think 'Of Mice and Men' if both protagonists are Lenny, and one of the films that cemented star, James Eugene Carrey in the hearts and minds of the movie going public as the funniest man alive.

Rocket and Groot

I have yet to see Guardians of the Galaxy, but as an avid fan of (most) Marvel movies basically any film adaptation of the comics that stays true to the spirit and generally accepted appearance of the characters is a slam dunk (yes that's a 90's basketball reference) in my eyes. To me that's what Guardians is, it's a bunch of characters that no one up until now has really heard of now they're viral. Much like the wildcard winner of a singing contest show, one day you're languishing in obscurity next thing it's FAME! I wanna live forever!!

I made this fan art piece based on an adaptation of an adaptation of an appropriation I was originally inspired by one of my favourite illustrators, Chris Wahl who had made a fan art piece based on an original piece created by Bill Watterson (also a artist hero of mine) so I thought I'd post this one as both a tribute to them and a strike while the iron is hot type deal.

Pacific Rim. To say this movie has it all and is a fine example of a  watchable game, as opposed to a playable movie- which, let's face it, a huge array of video games are these days is an understatement. It's as if all those fan emails griping about how flawed movie adaptations of comic books, adventure games, saturday morning cartoons and other franchises was answered with a "Leave it with me, I'll make something you might actually like" reply.

The story is a basic one: Giant robots vs giant monsters. 

The message is a blunt one: "Be careful to the environment" 

The influences are as follows: 

The wicked fun of the 1998 Godzilla movie (which was and is fantastic in spite of critical panning)

Combining all the kitch of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers:

 with a whole lot of homage to Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty.

This movie is how giant robot verses giant monster movies should be done. The human characters aren't getting in the way or being shoehorned into a story that never really needed them they're integral.

Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound- and the ability to fly too comes in handy.

I've been avoiding a lot of the reviews as the reboot of the reboot of the reboot of Superman is yet to finally be released in Australia ( We tend to be somewhere near the back of the queue when it comes to the blockbusters waiting list ). So for fans everywhere having to take the deliberate measures to dodge and duck for cover from a hail of spoilers is an interesting little exercise. We watch trailers with bated breath hoping the entire movie doesn't get summed up in 4 minutes, we check rotten tomatoes with the apprehension of a kid who's presents are already under the Christmas tree weeks, before the actual holiday. 

One of the problems with the real life movie adaptations of the worlds most powerful superhero is unlike a faithful animated series or video game treatment of the source material it's kind of a mixed reaction. The films Christopher Reeve made are a prime example, so too is the film starring Brandon Routh. 

Some things I do like about the newest iteration of Supes here regard my theory on aesthetics a prime example the new improved superman suit is designed to look not only more "alien" because Kal El is Krytonian are after all, there's also a retro cadillac look about the lines and his red undies are on the inside for a change, because lets face it onesies are big these days! Also the other Kryptonians in the movie are far more alien too, and by alien it's more in the Star Trek definition of what counts as "alien" pointy ears, a metal eyebrow or a skin condition etc. Basically to go unnoticed in the American midwest yet still get mistaken for a bird or a plane...

This one looks awesome though, when I get a chance to see it I'll update.
