The Lost Progress Shots: Pizza Hut call centre mural.

The original progress shots from my first mural piece I began work on in March of 2004, I'd won a contest held by the company (of which I was an employee at the time) and basically was paid my standard wage to do what I love. These photos where taken of by me on an old canon film camera to give an idea how much has changed in such a short time. The stairwell was cleaned, primed and I set to work with charcoal then enamel based paint.

 These are some of the additional designs I made for the 34 Degrees South Restaurant, Bondi beach. Continuing in the same theme of the Jazz band and keeping the cartoon line style.

 Other designs for the mural, these were some additional designs I put together for the 34 Degrees South Restaurant, a continuation of the jazz band theme on the feature wall. These were proposed ideas for the ladies room.

I had been working at the Pizza Hut Call Centre in Sydney for a few years since leaving the Disney Studio, I was studying (kind of) at the time at TAFE. The place provided at the time was one of the greatest social outlets a bored 20- something could ask for and the meagre income was also a bonus.

It was the tail end of the summer of 2004, the work was easy, (bordering on the mind numbing) but still it was a great place to work nonetheless, it was a normal day just like every other one I got off the train jumped the fence through the military base and showed up to work as I'd done countless times for another forgettable shift that would undoubtedly be spent making little sideways glances at the cuter of the co-workers watching Big Brother, (one of the first useless reality shows) with the sound off and patiently staring the clock until I could scoot home early, or the iPhone was invented. 

It was on this day I found one of the office pamphlets to be most interesting (given that up until then it was mostly motivational garbage about not using the same spoon for sugar and instant coffee) it was a competition to find a design for a mural for the call centre entrance, before then all there was was a nice nicotine stain. Needless to say...I won!

34 Degrees South Mural process shots 2011

 More of the mural painting process, basically these are painted in massive panels, think Secret Wars but somewhat slower. 


The basic design outline of the piece is sketched out on the wall in willow charcoal, is then painted over with black oil based enamel.


The colouring or in this case the various grey tones are mixed and applied this can be messy, potentially toxic work work so I can't stress the O.H and S enough. 


If you are going to do one of these remember. 

• Work slowly but thoroughly- don't rush these things but don't drag it out.

• Invest in disposable rubber gloves, if you can get a box of 100 on the cheap they'll not only save you a lot of grief when you go to touch your face, scratch, eat etc. And you can greatly avoid washing your hands in turpentine.   





• Have a separate brush for each colour or tone, preferably a big brush and a small brush, and a tiny brush for ultra-fine work.

• Keep these brush sets with each colour and have a separate container for each. 

• Brushes are inexpensive for the most part, for the big brush you do better to go to the hardware store, the mid size brush you can find in most variety stores (please note that most of these are extremely poor quality with bristles that may fall out and flimsy handles)

34 Degrees South Mural 2011

This is the mural I painted in May of 2011. A combination of enamel and water based paint. Approximately 18 sqm of wall coverage.  


I was called in to design for 34 Degrees South, Food, Wine, Music a restaurant and night club on Bondi Beach in Sydney.


Though this was rendered much faster in this video the whole thing took approximately a week and 2 days. Which for the size of the wall space would have to be the fastest indoor mural I've ever done.


I would also like to acknowledge the following who helped make this happen: The owner and proprieter thank you for the opportunity to make this, Elise and Amy who not only made me look good as supporting groupies but helped out with the recording of the photos and videos.
