August catch up...

Well it has been a while since I posted anything here, this year has for the most part been busy and it's been job after job. I guess busy is as busy does:
So as a personal challenge and a studio job had popped up I decided to do an exercise in drawing something other than caricatures and give digital painting

The Lighning Wyrm, a concept piece I came up with based loosely on a pet axolotl I have.

Aladdin fan art... R.I.P Robin Williams 

Stylised realistic tiger, I ran out of time so I threw the "cut out" filter over the top and called it a day. 

The Xavier Institute Fightin' Wolverines

I based the design for this fan art piece on the Notre Dame Fightin' Irish mascot.

Like many of my drawings these ideas begin life as sketches on paper.

I've always been fascinated by the design that goes into the mascot characters of sports teams, for the most part as a kid with only a mild interest in sport it was the only thing I found that appealed to me.

The logo is not only a sweet cartoon of a stocky, quick-tempered leprechaun stereotype it's also one of the most geometrically balanced caricatures I've ever seen. So naturally when I saw it I thought Wolverine.

New digital work

Here's a few more examples of reducing my carbon foot print, sort of. By supporting some of the native wildlife and their quest to become the best martial artists ever.
As some examples of projects I do that have very little to do with caricatures, illustration, particularly cartoon based work is where my passion also is.

Yes that is a platypus balancing on top of the head of a koala like the awesome scene from the Karate Kid movie. 

I never got a chance to smash balsa wood planks when I was doing karate but my characters get to.

Z Brush Poison Ivy fan art piece Work in Progress.

This piece I've been working on for a while using a combination of z spheres, shapes, duplicates and extractions though Edgar is a more complete piece he was far easier to make (not so many parts) not true of this one which is, part character design portfolio piece, part fan art piece, part pin up piece and is the work in progress result of much trial and error and the fact Z Brush has an autosave ability that is truly a life saving thing of brilliance :)

Avengers Assembled fan art concept piece

Captain Thor Hulk Man. This has no doubt been dreamed up before but a combination of the big 4 of the Avengers I felt needed to be drawn it'd normally be a Sketch Book Session piece but when I run out of spare pages in my sketchbook I simply return to my old way of drawing, plundering the stack of A4 print paper.

TEERECKS

Currently I'm working on a series of dinosaur based cartoons as nice little portfolio stuffers for potential up coming work, well that's the rationale behind just wanting to draw dinosaurs again because after the age of about 12 finding an excuse actually becomes more of a challenge. I was initially inspired by googling The Art of Crash a series of concept sketches on collector cards that came out with the tie in for the original Jurassic Park movie. Most of these cards where just stills from the movie but the art cards were something else. I was 10 when the first movie came out and at the time it solidified an at times on again off again love of dinosaurs.

Every once in a while you'd come across a card like this amongst film stills of Sam Neil, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern, it was, to my 10 year old self epic! To this day, it still is.
