 Domino from X-Men, I still am not entirely sure what her powers are, but her costume is pretty cool, drew this one back in 2019 before the lock-down.

Here's a coloured version of the Z Brush sculpt, soon to be detailed and posed. Though she's a scientist the 1950's rockabilly horn rimmed sunnies were a gotta have; the final version will probably not include it.   

2011 WIP 2014

It's weird sometimes how something like a sketch can go into the "To-Do" pile and nothing will happen for nearly 3 years. This would be one of those examples, I draw, a lot and from time to time I'll make something I'm proud of, makes me laugh or strangely and monumentally indifferent about. When I saw the original date I made this sketch I was instantly reminded that I had big plans for the piece and that I can barely remember 2011. I guess time flies when your concept of it never matches quite what you experience.

This piece I've been working on for a while using a combination of z spheres, shapes, duplicates and extractions though Edgar is a more complete piece he was far easier to make (not so many parts) not true of this one which is, part character design portfolio piece, part fan art piece, part pin up piece and is the work in progress result of much trial and error and the fact Z Brush has an autosave ability that is truly a life saving thing of brilliance :)

I'm currently still teaching myself Z Brush, a program in my humble opinion is probably the most awesome creative platform since I discovered MS Paint as a kid in the 90's. Ok that may be a stretch but back in 1994 MS Paint was the greatest.

Meet Edgar, yes I know most of what I've been creating has been a tad nightmarish and grim but stick around, it's all part of a far cooler bigger thing. Loosely based on Audrey 2 from 'Little Shop of Horrors" and the piranha plants from Mario Bros I wanted to make a cool venus fly trap monster. So using multiple component shapes for the head (sphere), flower (cone), soil (sphere), pot (cylinder)  and root (cylinder) coming out the side are all separate 'sub tools' that can be worked on independent of the others.

Here's a close up, I wanted to make the whole man eating plant concept more plant like especially when it came to the teeth as in different versions the teeth have always appeared more animal I wanted to make them seem more like thorns. 

I'm working on making the pot look more beaten up and giving way to the plant slowly beginning to escape, I also like the character of it.

That being said as the title, yes I'm aware that the shelf life of saying "Happy New Year" to strangers and loved ones expires faster than fries after going cold and being temporally resuscitated in the microwave. I felt I needed to write more this year too, and keep my resolutions modest achievable and above all not some bucket of approval chum for my compliment fishing trip. So I decided to kick off the new year with an idea I hit upon in 2012 called the Pin Up Pop Culture Princesses (Pop Culture Pin Up Princesses as they were originally billed) I figured it's high time I brought back an old favourite.

I'm training myself to draw more dynamic poses, animate more and sign "2014" as the year, baby steps. 

Cammy, is a gorgeous and thoughtfully designed fighter from the Street Fighter franchise (a game I've loved watching my arse get kicked at, by far better players since I was a kid). The deal with Cammy is multi layered, she's got camouflage gear and paint on (get it? Cammy-flauge lol) she also brings a little bit of balance to an otherwise totally male dominated game series; with this pose I was going for kind of a dynamic version compared to some of my other pin ups which seem a tad static, sedentary she's more like a dancer and I'll be posting a finished coloured version at some later date.

I finally got around to watching The Walking Dead, nothing like the captive audience of a nonstop flight from Sydney to L.A.

During my first long haul flight and international trip I had to figure out a way to keep myself entertained so I ended up watching the entire 2nd season of The Walking Dead, an awesome show with a self explanatory title. As I tried to make myself as comfortable as possible (being a little over 6  foot is not easy) I settled into a compelling show about what best to do during a zombie apocalypse (turns out arguing and splitting up is never a great option) and one character stood out for me, being motorcycle riding, crossbow toting redneck survivalist Daryl Dixon, played by Norman Reedus.

 Some development sketches of one of the more underrated cinematic gems I remember watching as a kid: The Rocketeer from 1991.

Added texture and shading and a bit of a background.

Sopranos Work in Progress

After a while everything becomes a caricature to a caricaturist, it's how the world becomes when seen through that lens. 

Here's a teaser of my latest fan art project, like with a great deal of the pieces I get inspired by I've never actually sat through an entire episode of the show. But I do like the characters particularly in this poster.

I loves me some Bioshock, seriously if any game was going to give the first person shooter a distinct look and feel this would have to be the twist. Though not a game changer per se it was definitely a changed game macabre, surreal and well paced I'm totally looking forward to Bioshock Infinite.

Oh Daenery Girl Miss August

Meet Miss August Daenerys Targaryen, from the show Game of Thrones (something else I never get around to actually watching, but hey) this one is more an honourable mention from the Sketch book sessions rather than a completed piece as this month has been somewhat chaotic. Stylistically I was going for something reminiscent of Paul Kidby on the part of the dragon in particular.

ThisWillem Dafoe caricature I did earlier today is a WIP featuring basic colouring and sketch. Dafoe one of the more under rated hollywood legends has a truely distinctive face, which does remind me of a weapon of some sort concealed in a crumpled paper bag. Sharp, sinister and debonaire he's going to be a lot of fun to finish.

My version of the Disney version of Edgar Rice Burrough's Tarzan. He's one of those amazingly iconic, somewhat dated, and when put under a critical microscope, naive literary characters of the last 100 years. As a kid these creations can be absorbed as living storybooks, the animation is superb, if a little "anime-ish" at times. As an adult I look at such well designed cartoon characters more analytically. So here's part one of my caricature.
