Frankenstein's Bride

Happy Halloween! From beautiful, warm, sunny, daylight-savings-having Sydney. As much as I love this holiday much like Christmas it never quite gelled with the seasons we have in the land down under. Simply put, it's too hot here to be singing about snow. Halloween is at best celebrated tentatively here but it is still a fun time of year, any excuse for cosplay am I right?

The Bride of Frankenstein something I drew last year is not only this month's Pop Culture Pin Up Princess but my homage to the females of the horror genre.

The hunt for Miss October

From the Sketch Book Sessions it's the MissingPop Culture Pin Up Princess. A tribute to not only Cat Woman, but somebody that I used to know.

Oh Daenery Girl Miss August

Meet Miss August Daenerys Targaryen, from the show Game of Thrones (something else I never get around to actually watching, but hey) this one is more an honourable mention from the Sketch book sessions rather than a completed piece as this month has been somewhat chaotic. Stylistically I was going for something reminiscent of Paul Kidby on the part of the dragon in particular.

Miss July 1 Broke Girl

Though I'm not one for prime time sitcoms I did need a proper Miss July 2012 so I decided on the lovely Kat Dennings who plays Max from the show 2 Broke Girls.

Chun Li caricature 2010

Chun Li from Street Fighter the noo Miss Joon as Pop Culture Pin-Up Princess, this piece is yes a couple of years old but it's the most complete and cute, plus I love it.

As the only female character in the original game she occupied a very special place amongst the all male cast she doesn't feel out of place or there as politically correct window dressing she is a power character in her own right and her unique of traditional Chinese dress wrestling boots accessorising with spiked tires bracelets and white jellyfish, Princess Leia, Brain Slug hair ties.

Katy Perry caricature

Sesame's Treat ;)
I think when we all first saw this we thought, wow, Elmo really has not only completely taken over Sesame St, but invaded the collective subconscious of the pop culture zeitgeist... Ok perhaps I'm reading too much into it. Elmo is EVERYWHERE! Like some dehorned fuzzy incubus he went from cute side character to the main focus through which stories involving a pet goldfish and counting were told.

Oh and beyond that introduction it's Pop Culture Pin Up Princess time!!! It's winter here at the moment so I figured since I'm doing much more studio work I'd include this Katy Perry caricature from her appearance on Saturday Night Live! So not a moment too soon here's Miss June!

Amelia Gamble SBS Sketchbook Sessions Ed Dyer PCPP

Meet Miss May, Amelia Gamble a tribute to all the girls I've loved before- well, up until 2009. As a Pop Culture Pin Up Princess it's really an "in name only" title as she is an original creation and a way of honouring my exes; weird though that may sound I really have no animosity towards any of them, which can either be attributed to either my ability to move on after a break up or theirs.
It's also a nice example of my early stuff, the anatomy is a little off, though the head is supposed to be that big and the original sketch has not been worked on since.

Through out the rest of May and June I will be bringing out more of my old stuff.

Morrigan Pop Culture Pin-Up Princess April 2012

My pop culture pin-up princess for April meet Morrigan, unofficial representative mascot for the Darkstalkers fighting game franchise from Capcom. I love the Darkstalkers series which I find far more interesting and immersive than the Street Fighter games so for this fan art piece I decided on a comic book art style beginning with a basic pencil under sketch followed by inking with brush tip marker and finally colouring and composing digitally. The pose was something I'd wanted to do for a while obviously I wanted to go for seductive and yet relaxed but at the same time I wanted to draw upside down.

Some of my source material ^_^

Rose McGowan in her role as Cherry Darling from the movie GRINDHOUSE, how can you not love a go-go dancer with a prosthetic leg made out of a machine gun with a grenade launcher attachment!

Tattoo Page Miss January 2012 by Ed Dyer

January's Pin Up and first one of the year, inspired of course by Betty Page, tattoos and the colour red. For those who are regular visitors to my blog or just stumbled upon this pet project/labour of love/gallery of miscellaneous have probably noticed I frequently post my latest caricature drawings from Luna Park but I enjoy throwing in something different and not directly related. Hope you like it.
