Selfie 2013

I've drawn a caricature of myself every year since I began in this gig some 5 years ago- this is this year's one.

I don't normally trace directly from photos, but I figured, sure why not.

Pacific Rim Dr. Hermann Gottleib and Dr. Newton Geiszler

Pacific Rim. To say this movie has it all and is a fine example of a  watchable game, as opposed to a playable movie- which, let's face it, a huge array of video games are these days is an understatement. It's as if all those fan emails griping about how flawed movie adaptations of comic books, adventure games, saturday morning cartoons and other franchises was answered with a "Leave it with me, I'll make something you might actually like" reply.

The story is a basic one: Giant robots vs giant monsters.

The message is a blunt one: "Be careful to the environment"

The influences are as follows:

The wicked fun of the 1998 Godzilla movie (which was and is fantastic in spite of critical panning)

Combining all the kitch of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers:

with a whole lot of homage to Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty.

This movie is how giant robot verses giant monster movies should be done. The human characters aren't getting in the way or being shoehorned into a story that never really needed them they're integral.

The Kaiju in this pic has the same view of the Harbour bridge as I do from work.

Batsy,

Made me think...
I saw the movie Hotel Transylvania a few weeks back, probably my favourite Halloween theme inspired animated movie since Nightmare Before Christmas and my favourite Adam Sandler movie since Happy Gilmore. This little character just kind of popped into my head as this refreshing blast of traditional vampire aesthetic came through like an uninterrupted parade of awesomeness via my TV.

SNOVA SYDNEY 2013

I gotta admit the indoor hat wearing was somewhat fun, though the hat hair resulting was a little tricky to contend with.
The Supanova photos are arguably from the best Sydney convention I've attended and had an artist alley table at. Alongside my associate Josh Spencer and my good friend and assistant Jas helped make this one truly great. Mostly due to the fact I didn't need to take all the photos myself and the extra help was totally welcome. As far as conventions for this year this will probably be my last one in Australia as I'll be heading overseas later on for a caricaturist con in the states which should be pretty awesome.
